DEARING, Ga. - Mr. Roy Thomas Kirkland, 86, husband of Kathyrn Kirkland, of Dearing, entered into rest Saturday, December 3, 2005.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2005, at the Harlem United Methodist Church with the Revs. Roger Vest and Rudolph Dixon officiating. Interment was in the Dearing Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Kirkland was born in Wrens, Ga., and was the son of Ollie Crawford Kirkland and Ada Newsome Kirkland. He was a Marine veteran of World War II and the Iwo Jima Invasion. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart Award. He had retired from civil service with the weapons department and was a member of NARFF. Mr. Kirkland was a member of the Harlem United Methodist Church, the Walton Griffin Sunday School Class, and the United Methodist Men.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Taylor Kirkland, Dearing; one daughter, Bebe C. Miles, Cumming; one brother, James Oliver Kirkland, Atlanta; one sister, Virginia Fox, Batesburg,S.C.; two grandsons, Britton Kirkland Miles and Trenton Crosby Miles and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Bobby Culpepper, Oran Johnson, Billy Wells, Lloyd Axon, Allen Axon, Jack McCorkle, and Larry Fulmer. Honorary pallbearers were the Walter Griffin Sunday School Class, Charles Brewer, Buck Story, Pete Llewellyn, Jack Hatcher, Chris Logue, and William Helmly.
