The McDuffie County Board of Education is considering a "balanced calendar" or "year round school (YRS)." This is a school calendar with the same number of school days but spread across the entire year. The summer break, as we know it, is eliminated.Numerous studies with hard facts show that YRS does not improve academic test scores.
As for example, our neighboring state, North Carolina's BOE conducted a study that included 345,000 students and no academic improvement was found.Ý This study and many more can be found at www.geocities.com/balancedschoolcalendar/cons/.
Jan. 15 is the date our local Board of Education will discuss the calendar...one month is all we have to get the facts. This is not an adequate amount of time for parents to hear, understand, process, research, and respond to the YRS calendar proposal. A school calendar change is not an emergency and both pros and cons should be considered and parents need to be included.
I applaud the effort to try to better the education in McDuffie but YRS is not the right way.
Call your superintendent of schools at 595-1918, school board members, principals and teachers and push for stopping the process of approving the year round calendar until if can be fully researched.
