Don't let Christmas pass you by

What a wonderful time of year the "Christmas Season" is! It is a time to observe expressions of excitement and surprise on a child's face, to experience families reunited, to sit mesmerized by the glow of bright lights on a green Christmas tree.

Christmas is a time of sweet reflection. We think of those Christmases of long ago and of those with whom we shared them.

Christmas is a time when life comes into focus. It becomes clearer what life can be with the exercise of love. The emptiness of life without love also stands in stark contrast to those we see gathered around the cradle.

The story of the birth of a baby, the song of the heavenly host, the adoration of shepherds, the gleam of a star, and the gifts of wise men help us set our values straight. It focuses our attention on the importance God places on every human life.

In the New Testament there were six individuals or groups of individuals who were eye witnesses (or nearly so) to the birth of Jesus Christ. Each one reacted differently to the event, and their reactions parallel those of people today.

In each case their reactions revealed their true understanding of Christmas. While the innkeeper and Herod were blinded to the truth of Christmas, the shepherds and wise men were drawn to His cradle and His star.

Joseph and Mary were those who represented faithfulness and selflessness in their unique service to the Lord.

We too must be careful not to let Christmas pass us by. It is all too easy to get so caught up in the tinsel and glitter that we miss the straw and the star.

May our entire community have a meaningful and spirit-filled Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone.
