Bringing Manna to McDuffie

Some time ago when I came to Thomson as the pastor of Pine Grove Baptist church we were looking for a local organization to help transients and the needy in our community with food and other emergency needs they brought to the churches. We found that the existing organizations, Agape and We Care had all the work they could handle.

It became evident that if the churches in our county could pool their resources we could help more people, keep more accurate records of the people we help and take a terrific burden off of the staffs of the local churches.

The new organization, Manna, will feed the hungry, help those in need and be a community witness for Jesus Christ. We can do so much more and in a more efficient manner together.

We are asking all the churches in McDuffie County to assist Manna, Inc. in our efforts. Manna will be a faith based organization supported by the local community and churches. We are asking for contributions from the churches as well as volunteer workers to help with the day to day operations.

Manna, Inc. will focus on McDuffie County. When a person comes to a church in our area for help, the church will refer the client to Manna on Greenway Street. Manna will interview, qualify and attempt to meet at least the immediate needs of the person requesting help.

Manna has hired a full-time coordinator, Machelle Campbell, who will direct and train volunteers, help clients get help and refer clients to existing organizations for long-term needs.

Our executive board will be comprised of 11 members: the chair, vice-chair, secretary/treasurer, one government representative, one agency representative, one We Care representative, and five representatives from area churches. All participating churches will have a voice in the operation of Manna.

Manna, Inc. will take over the facilities currently being used by We Care, Inc. All of our funding will come from contributions from churches and individuals. We will seek and utilize any and all funds available as long as the gift does not carry any restrictions on our ability to witness in the name of God.

If people want to help with contributions of time or money they should call Machelle Campbell at 595-1418. Our most immediate needs are for funding, volunteers with the ability to help with renovation of our building and organizing the work space. Machelle is coordinating a cleaning effort on Monday, Dec. 29, Tuesday Dec. 30 and Friday, Jan. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone that can help, please call Machelle.

All donations can be sent to Manna Inc., P.O. Box 68, Thomson, Ga., 30824.
