Norris Class of 1965 gathers for reunion at old school

The R.L. Norris High School Class of 1965 celebrated their 40th class reunion, Sunday, Dec. 4, at the R.L. Norris Elementary School. The marquee in the front read "Home of the Rams - Welcome Class of 1965."

Teachers attending this reunion were Coach Calvin Sampson, Mrs. Mary Sampson - cheerleader sponsor, Coach George T. Drake, Mrs. Billie Drake and senior class advisor, Mr. Luther Wilson.

Local classmates attending this reunion were Jamie Burnett, Charlie Taylor, Johnny "Knot" Norris, William Sturgis, Moses Cummings, Luther Stokes, Helen Finch, Arlene Gross Bowdry, Gloria Bentley Cofer, Pearlie Heard Howard, Sandra Brundage McNair, Mary Crenshaw McNair, Betty Hampton, Joann Hampton Sturgis, Peggy Harris Parks, Mary Turman Hill, Beauty Holliman Cummings, Lillie Cummings Hanson, Vivian Dupreee Kitchens and Patsy Hester Jones.

During the event, classmates and guests sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" (led by Evelyn Hawthorne), heard a prayer by Johnny Norris and a scripture reading from Sister Mary Hunt; followed by some wonderful sharing of reflections and remarks of the "Good Olde Days."

Each classmate thanked the teachers for always being there for them and being inspirational in molding their futures. It was also apparent by remarks given that this group has not only been successful but certainly has grown spiritually.

Mr. and Mrs. William (Joann) Sturgis were high school sweethearts who have remained happily married for the last 39 years.

Candles were lit in remembrance of deceased classmates: Gwendolyn Hall, Walter Shaw, Fred "Douglas" Hart, Hazel Lazenby, Willie Frazier, McArthur Neal, Ervin "Frog" Morris, Dorothy McGahee McEroy, Annie Lee Thomas lazenby, Dorothy Reese Dunn, David Moore Dunn, Robert Bowdry, Melvin Jackson, Joe Butler, Dorothy Brown, Willie Rivers and Alex "Bobby" Kendricks.

Candles were also lit for Principals R.L. Norris and S.M. Logan, as well as for other deceased faculty members.

The R.L. Norris Class of 1965 expresses sincerest thanks and appreciation to Principal Steve Rhodes, Bi-Lo (Mr. McCorkle), Mrs. Thelma Harris Reese, Mr. Johnny Wright and fellow classmates for helping to make this both a memorable and enjoyable occasion. Also we would like to thank Antionette Hester and Sabrina Harris for the beautifully decorated Norris cafeteria with the class colors of yellow and black.
