McDuffie United Way drive reaches half of goal

The annual United Way Campaign has collected $42,000, nearly half of its $90,000 goal, said Charles Bellmann, executive director of the local United Way which serves both McDuffie and Warren County.

"The companies and individuals have received the drive very well," Mr. Bellmann said.

The campaign, which got a later start than usual this year, will continue until the middle or end of January to allow all interested firms to participate. Some firms are unable to run the campaign in late December.

"I'm confident we will reach our goal of $90,000 in January," Mr. Bellman said.

United Way funds raised during this campaign would benefit 17 local agencies and all decisions on how to disburse the donations will be made locally, said Tommy Phelps, president.

A volunteer board of directors will disburse funds to a number of local organizations that help the needy and foster development of youth and leaders.

Donations from businesses as well as individuals may be sent to The United Way, P.O. Box 87, Thomson, GA 30824.

Organizations supported by the United Way of McDuffie and Warren Counties include:

Agape Outreach Ministries, American Red Cross, Boys and Girls Club of Thomson, Georgia-Carolina Boy Scouts Council, CSRA Girl Scouts Council, GA-TASC, Golden Harvest Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Horsefeathers Therapeutic Riding, Human Relations Commission, MANNA, McDuffie County 4-H, McDuffie County Special Olympics, Partners for Success, Prevent Child Abuse McDuffie County, Salvation Army -- McDuffie County unit, Sand Hills Psychoeducational Center and Thomson McDuffie County Recreation and Leisure Services.
