STAPLETON, Ga. -- Mr. Robert Wesley Smith, Jr., 85, went home to be with his Lord on December 10, 2008, at the VA Medical Center.
Graveside services were held Sunday, December 14, 2008, at 3 p.m. with Rev. John Jenkins officiating in the Adams Chapel Cemetery in Dearing.
Mr. Smith was born in McDuffie County to the late Robert W. Smith, Sr., and Martha Wren Smith. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Smith Stewart, and a brother, Auther Lee Smith, and his son, Reid Chaney, and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth C. Smith, Harlem; one brother Hoke (Delle) Smith, Dearing; six sons, Ronnie (Gail) Smith, Stapleton, Richard (Sandy) Smith, Warner Robins, Robert (Zettie) Smith, Hendersonville, NC, Allen (Justine) Smith, Dearing, Bobby (Song) Chaney, Killeen, Tex., Roby (Betty) Chaney, Austell,; four daughters, Rozie (Rick) Kerr, Jonesville, S.C., Reba Smith, Jonesville, S.C., Bessie (Jimmy) Law, Holly Pond, Alabama, and Leila (Jerry) Sineath; and 41 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Kevin Smith, Jeff Queen, John Smith, Arthur Smith, Blake Smith, Bobby Smith, and William Stewart, Jr.
