WARRENTON, Ga. - A 32-year-old registered sex offender from Warren County is in the custody of Alabama authorities after being arrested on sexual related crimes involving a teenage boy.
Warren County Sheriff's Department Deputy Sammy Purvis identified the suspect as Buford Eddy Terwilliger, of East Huff's Bridge Road. Mr. Terwilliger registered as a sex offender on Sept. 5, 2008, Deputy Purvis said. He had been required to re-register with the sheriff's department on his birthday last November. When he failed to do so, Deputy Purvis began to probe his whereabouts.
He discovered that Mr. Terwilliger left for Alabama three days after he registered as a sex offender in Warren County. Several days later, he was arrested as a suspect in sexual related crimes involving a 13-year-old teenger by law enforcement officers in Phenix City, Ala.
Alabama authorities have filed charges of sodomy in the second degree against Mr. Terwilliger, Deputy Purvis said. Two other charges also were filed against him. They include failure to register as a sex offender and living in a prohibited residence for a sex offender. Since his arrest on Sept. 15, the suspect has been held in the Russell County Jail.
Deputy Purvis said it is his understanding after talking with an investigator with the Phenix City Police Department that Mr. Terwilliger will be charged by federal authorities under the Adam Walsh Act, once the case is ready for trial. The U.S. Marshal's Service is expected to levy that charge.
Meanwhile, Deputy Purvis is preparing to draw warrants against Mr. Terwilliger for failure to notify authorities in Warren County that he had changed his address. Police in Phenix City indicated that the suspect was searching for a job when he came there.
Currently, there are 18 known and registered sex offenders residing in Warren County, Deputy Purvis said.
