Georgia law sets a three-person panel - consisting of Superior Court Clerk Connie Cheatham, Probate Judge Valerie Burley and Sheriff Logan Marshall in McDuffie County - to designate a qualified newspaper as the legal organ for a community. The panel - which included the late Gene Wells as Probate Judge - designated The Mirror as the legal organ starting Jan. 1, 2007.
"During the last two years I have developed a deepened respect and appreciation for Mrs. Cheatham, Judge Burley and Sheriff Marshall and their role in this process," Mr. Smith said. "Their integrity and commitment to our communities are above question. I look forward to working with them in the future as we continue our service to our communities."
