The McDuffie County Board of Education had its first meeting for the year, and made quick changes.
It was the last time for the monthly planning meeting to take place on the second Thursday morning of the month, the same day as the regular meeting, which is in the evening.
Immediately following the swearing-in ceremony, board members took care of some organizational items, which included selecting their meeting dates. New board member Greg Derry made a recommendation to hold the planning sessions at 8:30 a.m. on the Tuesday prior to the regular session, which will still be held at 6 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month. Bob Smith seconded the motion, and the change passed with a unanimous vote. Exceptions will be May through July, when the meetings will be held during the third week of the month due to holidays or other conflicting, prescheduled events.
The board also selected their new chair, Georgia Hobbs, who was vice-chairwoman last year. Ella Mae Samuels made the motion, with Mr. Smith's second, and the vote passed unanimously.
"I would like to thank my fellow members of the board for the confidence you have shown in me by electing me the new chair," Mrs. Hobbs said. "... With your help, we will act as a team, always working to do what is best to educate our children. After all, they are our most precious assets."
Dorothy Hart recommended Rick McCorkle to serve as vice chair, which was seconded by Dexter Lovins and passed unanimously.
