Last year, residents at Thomson Manor Health Care Center held a canned food drive for Valentine's Day. It was so successful, they are bringing it back with even more enthusiasm and purpose. A kick-off party was held last Thursday in the center's cafeteria.
"We keep hearing more and more in the news about more and more people losing their jobs, so we have more people to help this year. We're helping more than just children. We're helping entire families," staff member Beth Malone said.
Each staff member and resident participating in the drive had their few minutes to shine during the kick-off. The event is competitive, because the male and female resident who collects the most canned goods are crowned "Mr. and Mrs. Sweetheart" on Valentine's Day.
"I'm running for king of hearts again. I won last time, and I'd like to have my seat back," resident Henry Settles said. "I'm a little conceited, but I think I deserve it."
Emma Beard was crowned the queen last year at the end of the food drive, which benefits the local charity of choice for each participant.
Many businesses around Thomson have a box to collect donated canned goods for Thomson Manor's Sweetheart Drive. Persons wishing to donate for Manna or Agape should bring canned or non-perishable food. Persons wishing to help the animal shelter should bring pet food.
