Thomson High's Flanders received Golden Apple Award on Tuesday

Thomson High School teacher Kelly Flanders received a pleasant surprise Tuesday afternoon when numerous media representatives and school officials walked into her classroom. Brad Means, news anchor for Channel 6 in Augusta, presented Mrs. Flanders with the Golden Apple Award. The award honors local teachers who believe in the true spirit of teaching and make a crucial difference in children's lives.

Helen Johnson, the coordinator of the Golden Apple program, said although the station receives 100s of nominations every month, only 32 Golden Apples are awarded.

Ms. Flanders was nominated by THS senior Victoria Treadwell. Victoria said she had failed the language arts portion of the Georgia graduation tests three times when Mrs. Flanders, who is not her regular teacher, offered to tutor her after school at no charge. After four weeks of meeting with Ms. Flanders, Victoria said she passed the test on her first try.

"She went beyond her job and gave me the extra encouragement I needed," Victoria said.

Ms. Flanders will be honored with a formal presentation during a banquet for all recipients at Augusta State University in May.
