p>WARRENTON, Ga. - After winning basketball games against Taliaferro and Glascock counties earlier last week, the Lady Screaming Devils of Warren County allowed the visiting Hancock Central Lady Bulldogs to sneak up on them at the WCHS gym last Saturday night.
The Lady Bulldogs beat Warren County 46-38 before nearly a standing room only crowd.
After the loss, Warren County Jaamal Rhoades remarked, "We've got to get accustomed to winning big games. The effort by our girls was there against Hancock Central. It's just the little stuff holding us back from where we need to be."
Warren County continues to hold down first place in sub-region play with a perfect 5-0 record. Overall, the Lady Screaming Devils are 14-8.
The Lady Screaming Devils drew within four points, 24-20, after Warren County's Tynisha Harris hit a hoop. Hancock Central came right back to increase their lead to six before Warren County junior sensation Candice Warthen hit a jumper to again cut the lead to four, 26-22. Warthen later made one of two free-throws to make it a three point game.
Warthen, who scored 16 points against the Lady Bulldogs, later hit a three-point basket from the top of the key to cut Hancock Central's lead to 32-28 going into the fourth period.
She later stole the ball and went coast-to-coast to make it a 32-30 game. That was as close as the Lady Screaming Devils ever drew.
