Thomson Lady Bulldogs defeat West Laurens in double-OT

The Thomson High Lady Bulldogs played their most thrilling basketball game of the season last Saturday night at the Thomson gym. In double-overtime, Thomson defeated the West Laurens Lady Raiders 48-47 to pick up their second win of the season.

In a recent game against the Washington County Lady Golden Hawks played in Sandersville, Thomson played an impressive game but ended up losing by six points, 50-44.

First year Thomson Head Coach Michael Williams said he was pleased with his team's overall efforts in both of those games.

"We were finally able to find a way to win a game at the end and that was great," Coach Williams said.

One of the star players for Thomson was Natasha Ballard, who managed to sink a pair of free-throws with just 13 seconds remaining in the second four-minute overtime period.

"It feels great," Ballard said after the game. "We played a real good game."

Ballard bucketed 18 points against West Laurens.

Thomson's Kierra Brown also played an outstanding game, snatching down a host of key rebounds during the two overtime periods. She was proud of her play, as well as that of her teammates.

"It feels extra ordinary," Brown said. "We played together as a team and it finally came together."

The game was tied 37-37 at the end of regulation thanks to a three-point basket by Thomson's Zakia Wilson from the top of the key, which sent the game into its first overtime.

With 1:44 to play in the first overtime, Brown hit a couple of crucial free-throws to give the Lady Bulldogs a 42-40 lead. West Laurens tied it up again on a basket with 26 seconds remaining, which sent the game into its second overtime.

The game was knotted at 44 with 1:12 left when West Laurens committed a critical turnover and Thomson's Brown hit a jumper, stripping the net to put the Lady Bulldogs back in the lead, 46-44.

Ballard went on to complete the win by hitting two free-throws.

Scoring points in the game aside from Ballard for Thomson included: Wilson, 8, Hart, 5, Andrea Culpepper, 5, Chiquita Kendrick, 5 and Kierra Brown, 4 points, respectively.
