Lady Dogs blast Jefferson County

The Thomson High Lady Bulldogs opened their 2009 soccer season with a 4-1 victory over the visiting Jefferson County Lady Warriors at The Brickyard in Thomson on Monday night.

Thomson was scheduled to play the Lincoln County Lady Red Devils in Lincolnton on Tuesday night. The team will travel to South Augusta to take on the Lady Razorbacks of Cross Creek on Friday.

"It was a nice start to the season," remarked first year Thomson Head Coach Jessica Ruark after her team's impressive win over Jefferson County. "I thought we played pretty well considering it was our first game of the season."

Thomson's Michele Lina Sa, an exchange student from Brazil, put the Lady Bulldogs on the scoreboard with their first goal with 25:31 left in first half action. With just 1:17 left, Miranda Barker scored Thomson's second goal to give the Lady Bulldogs a 2-0 lead, which is the way it remained at halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs played an outstanding defensive first half. Sarah Kellogg, who played goalie the entire game, had a number of saves in the game. She was supported by a cast of teammates who played outstanding defensive roles. They included Caitlin Carpenter, Amanda McClure, Ashley Frankenfield, Jau'Tabitha Hordens, Whitney Hillman and Shelby Gary.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Jefferson County scored their first and only goal of the game, cutting Thomson's lead to 2-1. It came when Kellogg was forced to move up in the box as more of the action centered in that area of the field. The ball later was kicked to a player who made a clear shot into the net.

Lina Sa attempted another goal for Thomson about a minute later, but the ball sailed over the goal post. She had received a nice pass from Frankenfield. Lina Sa tried another shot just seconds later, but it failed after hitting a Jefferson County player in the stomach.

After several nice runs and attempts to score, Hordens managed to score a goal at the 18:13 mark of the second half. The Lady Bulldogs then led 3-1. With 11:06 to play in the game, Lina Sa, Hordens and Barker were sandwiched around the Jefferson County goal when suddenly the ball hit the corner of the goal post and rolled beyond the goalie for another Thomson score.

Lina Sa and Barker later teamed up in another attempt to score a goal for Thomson. The ball, however, sailed wide at the last second.
