Local authorities investigating sixth armed robbery of year in McDuffie County

A masked man brandishing a gun robbed another business on Washington Road near Thomson late last Wednesday, authorities say. It marked the sixth armed robbery to have occurred in McDuffie County since the New Year began.

As of Tuesday, there still had been no arrests made in any of the robberies - all of which have taken place in the county - with the exception of one, which occurred in the city limits of Thomson.

The public's help still is being sought by local and state authorities to establish leads that might lead to arrests being made in the cases. A $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible is being offered by the McDuffie County Sheriff's Department.

"We've gotten a phone call or two, but we still haven't been able to establish many leads," McDuffie County Sheriff's Department Major Ronnie Williamson said. "We're still asking for the public to help us. If anyone sees anything suspicious, we want somebody to give us a call and let us check it out."

Maj. Williamson said there are similarities in all six armed robberies, "but we don't have enough evidence to say that they have been committed by the same person. We just can't say that because we don't really know."

The latest armed robbery happened at the Raceway, located at 1920 Washington Road, shortly before midnight, Maj. Williamson said.

Like was the case in the other robberies, no one was injured.

The robber stuffed money that he got from a register drawer into his pants pockets before running out the store's front door. He last was seen running towards Dallas Drive.

Maj. Williamson said the robber wore a blue jump suit with a dark-colored baseball cap and a gray or white cloth mask over his face.

Anyone with information about the latest robbery or any of the other recent robberies, which have occurred since Jan. 5, should contact the McDuffie County Sheriff's Department at 706-595-2040 ext. 236 or 911; Thomson Police Department at 706-595-2166 or the Georgia Bureau of Investigation at 706-595-2575.
