A 92-year-old Thomson man was seriously injured after losing control of his car and crashing into a power pole in the yard of a residence off Lincolnton Highway on Thursday afternoon.
Ensley Byerd White, of the 5800 block of Lincolnton Road, was taken by ambulance to University Hospital in Augusta, according to Trooper First Class Ben Rollins of the Georgia State Patrol post in Thomson.
Mr. White treated at the scene by personnel with the McDuffie County Emergency Medical Services and firefighters/first responders with the McDuffie County Fire/Rescue Services
The mishap occurred about 4:50 p.m., according to Don Ginder, owner of the brick home that was nearly struck by the out-of-control Ford Tempo GL driven by Mr. White. At the time of the accident, Mr. Ginder said he was watching television, heard a noise but couldn't figure out what caused it.
Mr. Ginder said a friend dropped by and informed him that someone had struck the utility light pole in his backyard. The car missed slamming into the home by less than 10 yards.
Trooper Rollins said Mr. White had been traveling north on the Lincolnton Highway went he lost control of his car, went through a fence, crossed a pasture and a ditch and traveled through another fence before the car crashed head-on into the power pole. The trooper said the distance between where Mr. White lost control and where he hit the pole measured 451 feet.
