Authorities investigate assault claim against McDuffie deputy

McDuffie County Sheriff Logan Marshall has requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation look into a sexual assault allegation made against one of his deputies.

The deputy, whose name has not been made public, has not been suspended or charged with any crime, according to Sheriff Marshall and Gary Nicholson, special agent in-charge of the GBI Region 7 Office in Thomson.

Sheriff Marshall said he hopes that the investigation will conclude soon and that the facts will come to light.

"I want to find out the truth," Sheriff Marshall said during a brief news conference held at the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center on Monday afternoon.

Agent Nicholson said the sheriff requested that the GBI look into the allegation after he first learned about it last Friday afternoon.

The incident reportedly took place between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. that same day on "private property," Agent Nicholson said. "The employee was not working at the time of the incident," he added in a press release on Tuesday afternoon.

The deputy and the reported victim were both interviewed by GBI Special Agent Charles Kicklighter last Friday.

Agent Nicholson described the case as an open investigation, which precludes his agency from releasing any details about the alleged incident.

"The results of this investigation will be submitted to District Attorney Dennis Sanders upon the completion of the investigation and receipt of crime lab reports," Agent Nicholson said. "We promise a thorough and objective investigation."
