Briarwood falls to David Emanuel, 5-1

Briarwood Academy senior pitcher Cane Gilmer gave it everything he had and a little more in his complete game on the mound against David Emanuel Academy at the Briarwood field last Friday. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as the Eagles turned back the Bucs 5-1 in a cold and windy baseball outing.

The Buccaneers traveled to Waynesboro last Saturday where they were knocked off by Edmund Burke Academy.

On Tuesday, they were scheduled to play the Thomas Jefferson Academy Jaguars at home in the team's only game of this week. They will play John Hancock Academy on Tuesday, March 24, in Sparta.

After getting down 1-0 in the top of the first inning, Briarwood came right back to tie the game, 1-1 with a run in the bottom of that same inning.

And ironically, it was Gilmer earning the honor of scoring his team's only run of the game.

Briarwood senior left fielder Ryan Gerlach led off by grounding out to the first baseman before shortstop Dalton Reese reached on an infield single. Gilmer then reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on senior third baseman's hard-hit RBI single into right center field.

David Emanuel came back in the second inning and scored two more runs to take a 3-1 lead. They went on to add two more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Jordan Wiley, who pitched the entire game for the Eagles, also turned out to be the team's leading hitter with a pair of singles and a triple. He drove also drove in two runs.

Briarwood was able to collect only two more hits in the game. Those hits came off the bats of center fielder Matthew McElveen and catcher Adam Hardy.
