THS Boys' track team anchored by three seniors

Expectations are running high that this year's boys' varsity track team at Thomson High School will have a successful season, despite the team being young and inexperienced.

Coach Michael Costello says the team is anchored by three seniors. They include: Daniel Palmer, a discuss thrower, and runners Brandon Turman and Darius Eubanks.

"I wish we had more seniors, but that's it," Coach Costello said. "We're still a young track team and inexperienced in many areas."

This year's track team is competing against schools in a different region - several of which are located a long distance from Thomson. Going into Tuesday's meet against the Harlem High Bulldogs at Harlem, the Bulldogs sported a record of 0-1. They recently lost a meet at the hands of Greenbrier High's Wolfpack in Evans.

This Saturday, Thomson will travel to Augusta to compete in the Garden City Classic at Lucy Laney Memorial Stadium.

"We'll see a lot of fine talent at this weekend's meet," Coach Costello said.

Coach Costello said he had been pleased with the throwing performances of Leroy Cummings and Xavian Ivey. Cummings finished second in the shot putt during the Greenbrier event, while Ivey was runner-up in the discuss throw.

Four members of the Thomson track team, Brandon Turman, Darius Eubanks, Lynwood Few and Mariez Hamilton did not compete in the Greenbrier meet because of nagging injuries. In the case of Turman and Eubanks, it was because they just finished the basketball season.

Few, who has been experiencing shin splints of late, is hoping to be able to compete in this weekend's meet.

"We're counting on Lynwood, because he's our No. 1 runner in the 4 X 100 event," Coach Costello said.

Eubanks and Turman are two other runners whose services will be counted on heavily this weekend, he added. Eubanks competes in the triple jump, as well as the 100 and 200 yard dashes. Turman competes in the 800 event.

Other members of this year's boys' track team at Thomson High School include: Terrence Bradshaw, Billy Felts, Phillip Gibson, Greg Davis, Travis Gunn, William Hobbs, Strantavis Howard, Quarterius Hudson, Jalin Jackson, Aaron Johnson, Ronaudus Kitchens, Trez McGahee, Jaush McKinney, Demarcus Smith and Deontae Stephens.
