Hephzibah man killed in I-20 crash

A Richmond County man was killed in a single pickup truck crash on Interstate 20 in McDuffie County on Tuesday.

Coroner Rhusha Mack identified the victim as David Goetzman, of the 200 block of Manus Road, Hephzibah. Mr. Goetzman is believed to have died from blunt force trauma to the head, Coroner Mack said. An autopsy was performed at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Augusta on Wednesday.

Trooper First Class Mike Callaway of the Georgia State Patrol post in Thomson said Mr. Goetzman was a passenger in a 2008 Ford Ranger driven by his 16-year-old son, Harvey Michael Goetzman, of the same address. The mishap occurred at 4:10 p.m. near mile marker 167 close to the McDuffie-Warren county line.

The elder Mr. Goetzman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the truck into the roadway after his son lost control, over corrected and turned over at least twice, Trooper Callaway said.

No charges have been filed. The wreck remains under investigation by the trooper and the Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Reconstruction Team.
