Crash kills man, injures son

A pickup truck crash on Interstate 20 near the McDuffie-Warren County line left one man dead and his 16-year-old son in the Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

McDuffie County Coroner Rhusha Mack identified the victim as 43-year-old David Goetzman, of the 200 block of McManus Road, Hephzibah.

Mr. Goetzman was believed to have died from blunt force trauma to the head and was pronounced dead on the scene. Coroner Mack said an autopsy was planned for Wednesday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory in Augusta. The autopsy will reveal the exact cause of death.

Mr. Goetzman's son, Michael, also of Hephzibah, was taken by ambulance to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta. He was administered medical care at the scene by personnel from McDuffie and Warren counties.

The fatal mishap occurred near the 167 mile marker near the county line about 4:10 p.m., said Trooper First Class Mike Callaway of the Georgia State Patrol post in Thomson.

Michael Goetzman apparently lost control and overcorrected, causing him to lose control of the 2008 Ford Ranger, which turned over. Mr. Goetzman, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the truck.
