R.L. Norris Elementary School

Message from the Principal

We are excited to begin a new year at Norris Elementary! This year our theme is "Destination…Achievement." We have exciting plans for learning activities and programs built around our theme. Norris Elementary is located at 1861 Harrison Road and serves grades four and five. Our programs have been established to enrich and reward the academic and behavioral progress of our students. Since NES is a Renaissance School, achievement rallies will be held each nine weeks to celebrate our hard work. With "Destination Achievement" as our theme, we hope to enhance and foster the love of learning that already exists at Norris. We truly believe in celebrating all our students and their achievements. We will work closely together to serve our students the best that we can. If at any time, we can be of assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us.

New Personnel

Joining our faculty this year will be several new team members: Mrs. LaTanza Williams, Mrs.Ashleigh Williamson, Mrs. Amamda Burt, Miss Kristen Bragg, Mrs. Katherine Adcox, Mrs.Vicki Seal, and Mrs. Ashley Lunceford. We look forward to working with these wonderful people!

Teacher of the Year

We are also honored to have Mrs. Tamara Hammond as our 2010 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Hammond is a member of the fifth grade collaborative team where she teaches reading and language arts and instills daily enthusiasm in each of her students and co-workers. She also serves as our technology liaison and we all look to her for training and managing our technology needs. We are truly blessed to have Mrs. Hammond at Norris and McDuffie County is fortunate to have her as a teacher of our children.

Highlights

We are most pleased with the academic achievement of our students this past year and we have several initiatives we will be implementing and expanding this year at Norris. We are excited that our gifted program is becoming a collaborative program so more children benefit from this initiative. We have had several teachers earn the gifted endorsement to further our efforts. The collaborative model which serves our students with special needs continues to be a very successful model where students receive the benefit of teachers working as a team, focusing on student achievement with vigor. This year we will be adding a Math Coach to our team. We are so excited about this addition since this will assist teachers with utilization of the data and being able to focus on individuals needs of all the students in the area of math.

As we begin a new year at Norris, we look forward to providing a friendly school environment with great opportunities.

Please join us in support and volunteerism as we work to help our students become tomorrow's leaders. Together, we will raise student and staff achievement and success with "Destination ... Achievement."

New Beginnings

Open House - Thursday, Aug. 6, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

At the beginning of school, at no cost to parents/guardians, all students at NES will receive agenda books detailing expectations, school rules, and policies. Moreover, the book can serve as a calendar, homework notebook, and line of communication for teachers and parents.

Student Transportation - All bus routes will be available for review at open house. Students who are brought to school by parents should not arrive prior to 7:30 a.m. and should be picked-up prior to 3:00 p.m. For the safety of our students, phone messages will NOT be accepted to change a child's transportation mode. Parents must send a note with appropriate information so that changes may be approved.

MEEPS After-School Program - We are delighted to have an after-school program available for our students. The program hours are 3-6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This wonderful program provides academic, recreational, and enrichment support to our students. Please visit the after-school booth at open house to learn more about registering your child.

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)

Norris has a wonderfully supportive group of parents and teachers working together for students in our PTO. Please join us in support at meetings. All meetings are posted on the school calendar you will receive at the start of school. We have many exciting programs planned for the year! Visit our PTO booth at open house to become a member.

School Business Partners

We are very appreciative of the relationship we share with our valued business partners. We offer our sincere thanks to McCorkle's Nursery, Bi-Lo, Citizens Bank, Coca Cola, Georgia Power, McDonald's, Millie's Flowers, Pizza Hut, and Ryan's Steakhouse. It's truly a pleasure to have this support and we will strive to offer our support and thanks to all.
