SAFE SITTER PROGRAM

n MORE INFO: Sponsored by Safe Kids East Central, this nationally recognized, award-winning curriculum teaches 11 to 13 year olds how to handle emergencies while caring for younger children. During the course, instructors provide hands-on practice in basic techniques so the studentsare prepared to act in a crisis. Open to boys and girls. Call (706) 721-7606 to register. Cost is $25 per student and includes lunch.

MOVIE GALLERY BACK TO SCHOOL BASH

WHERE: Thomson Movie Gallery

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 15, 3 p.m.

n MORE INFO: This year's event will kick off with a Hannah Montana Look-A-Like Contest. A free copy of the new Hannah Montana movie will be awarded to the winner on its release date, Aug. 18. Vendors including Domino's Pizza, The Big Dipper and a local Girl Scout troop will be set up in and around the Movie Gallery. Top Dawg Pet Supply will be on hand with free gourmet dog treats and a nail trimming table for only $5 per pet. Thomson Presbyterian Youth group will hold a car wash to raise money for its youth trip. All of the event's proceeds will go toward charity. Donations of backpacks and school supplies for local children in need will be accepted. The Movie Gallery also is teaming up with Shepeard Community Blood Center for a blood drive.

WILDWOOD SPORTSMANS FESTIVAL

WHERE: Wildwood Park, Washington Road at Keg Creek Drive, Appling

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 5

MORE INFO: The second annual Wildwood Park Sportsman'sFestival will feature outdoor vendors and displays at Wildwood Park, on Clarks Hill Lake. Vendor spaces currently are available by calling Jeb Bell at (706) 210-4027.

COLONIAL COOKING DEMONSTRATION

WHERE: Elijah Clark State Park, 2959 McCormick Highway, Lincolnton

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 15, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

BARBECUE AND SAUCE CONTEST

WHERE: Harlem United Methodist Church field

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 12, Cooking starts at 7 a.m., music starts at 11 a.m., judging starts at 3 p.m. and winners are announced at 4 p.m.

MORE INFO: Sponsored by the Harlem Complete Count Committee and the United States Census, the Everybody Counts Barbecue Cookoff and Sauce Contest will include live entertainment, vendors, inflatables for children and food. Winners in the barbecue contest and sauce contest will receive cash prizes. Applications and rules are available at Harlem City Hall or at www.harlemga.org.
