Although much of creation rests in the fall, one local committee is determined to "bring downtown Thomson to life."
The Thomson-McDuffie Chamber of Commerce has started a committee to increase activity in downtown Thomson.
"People keep wishing their was something to do downtown, so we're planning a few things," said Chamber of Commerce Director Carolyn Gilbert.
A "Fallcrow" contest is taking place this month, according to Mrs. Gilbert, in which businesses decorate a scarecrow themed according to their business. Although the fallcrows will be set up around downtown Thomson, Mrs. Gilbert said the contest is open to any business anywhere in McDuffie County.
"So you can advertise your business and have some fun at the same time," she said. "We're hoping to get enough participation to have fallcrows all down Main Street."
Any business can register at the Chamber of Commerce for $10 and create a fallcrow. Each fallcrow should include the business's logo.
"We'll provide the hay bale and a sign for display. So, it's a good, cheap way to promote business," Mrs. Gilbert said.
The fallcrows should be made of nonperishable items to withstand the weather. The winning entry will be saved by the Chamber of Commerce to display next year. The deadline to have the fallcrows submitted is Thursday, Oct. 1.
