The Briarwood Academy Lady Buccaneers blanked the visiting Curtis Baptist Lady Crusaders of Augusta 6-0 at Briarwood for their eighth victory of the season Sept. 24.
Then in a doubleheader played Saturday, the Lady Bucs defeated Baptist Christian in both games.
In the game against Curtis Baptist, Briarwood rode the arm of freshman pitcher Megan Smith en route to the shutout. It was her first prep varsity complete game.
She yielded just four hits -- all singles -- while she recorded six strikeouts and walked four Lady Crusader batters.
The 15-year-old Smith was ecstatic afterwards, saying she felt good.
"My best pitch was my fastball," Smith said.
"I tried to work the outside corner with it."
Smith said she would never forget her first complete varsity pitching performance.
The Briarwood-Curtis Baptist game remained scoreless until the Lady Buccaneers scored their first three runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning.
Right fielder Megan May drew a leadoff walk before she stole second base.
After second baseman Savannah Carani struck out, Smith aided her own cause with a RBI single up the middle that allowed May to score the first of her two runs in the game.
Senior center fielder Lizzie Keen then became a strike-out victim for the second out before third baseman Maria Celeste Johnson drove Smith home with a RBI single to right field.
