McDuffie Mystery
Each week, readers can test their knowledge of history by trying to identify a mystery item on the Reflections page of The Mirror, courtesy of the McDuffie Museum. Director Jenny Lindsay said the purpose is to provide education about McDuffie County's history. Sometimes the item may seem obvious, but Ms. Lindsay encourages readers to try and figure out the details behind the item. Last week's mystery, (pictured) was a water bucket used by the Dearing Fire Department. The department used to hang their buckets outside. Ms. Lindsay said she was told the buckets kept getting stolen, so they had some specially made in a cone-shape so they would not be useful to most people. At that time, fires were extinguished using a water bucket assembly line. There are still traces of painted lettering identifying the Dearing Fire Department on the side of the bucket. See next week's edition for a new mystery item from the past.
