Dearing Elementary School's first- through fifth-graders entered the fire safety poster contest. Each student was given two weeks in art class to design a poster using the theme "Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned!"
The posters were judged by three firefighters, Lt. Stephen Parish, from Augusta Fire Department, Firefighter/EMT Steven Parish from Grovetown Fire Department and Firefighter Jim Parish, a volunteer with McDuffie County Fire Department.
On Friday, Sept. 25, the judges came to Dearing Elementary to award prizes donated by Thomson Fire Department to a first, second and third place winner from each homeroom, first through fifth grades.
The winners are:
First grade
First place -- Autumn Arrington, Ashton Arrington and Sarah Reece; Second place -- Damian Cady, Kay Lee Norris and Heather Boutwell; Third place -- Breanna Odum, Daniel Evans and Alexis Johnson
Second grade
First place -- Kelsey Dees, Bryanne Ligon, Teagan Lamberty and Chances Glover; second place -- Jason Norris, Austin Jeter, Robert McGahee and Madison Kent; third place -- Hunter Sanders, Demetrius Brown, R.J. Norman and Larria Brown
Third grade
First place -- Emily Greene, Hiris Baez, Cheyenne Murphy and Morgan Bailey; second place -- Kaylee Sweeney, Victoria Wells, Paige Wade and Lee Portwood; third place -- Haley Sleister, Odessa Thaxton, Justin Coleman and Cali Ruff
Fourth grade
First place -- Abigail Kelley, Jacob Barnes and Tony Stewart; second place -- Caitlin Payton, Mariah Kitchens and Morgan Workman; third place -- Kristen Perkins, Autry Smalls and Bailey Powers
Fifth grade
First place -- Brendan Albert, Hunter Tyler and Alexandria Enriquez; second place -- Vincent Rutherford, Caroline Seigler and Taylor Morris; third place -- Mia Jennings, Dakota Wagner and Samantha Rockefeller
First place winners were entered in the State of Georgia Fire Safety Contest in Atlanta.
A Fire Safety Coloring Contest was also held for kindergarten and pre-K students. Prizes were given to each first, second and third place winners in these categories. Winners are:
