Lisa Hawkins - Maxwell Elementary School

Q. How many years have you been teaching, and what subjects and grades are you currently teaching?

A. I have been teaching for 141/2 years. I have taught kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third grade. Currently I am teaching first grade, and I am the certified gifted first grade teacher at Maxwell Elementary. I teach all subjects including reading, math, social studies, science, writing, grammar, phonics, and spelling.

Q. Tell us about your family.

A. I am married to Mr. Travis Hawkins. I have two daughters, Rebecca, 11, and Shirah, 8, Johnson.

Our family enjoys playing with our three dogs, vacationing, gardening, cooking out on our patio, white water rafting, and taking fun, spontaneous, road trips! There is NEVER a dull moment in our lives and we try to live each day to its fullest! Each day that we have together is a blessing and we are thankful to have one another.

Q. What do you do when you're not teaching?

A. When I am not teaching and/or going back to school, I enjoy spending quality time with my family. My hobbies include being a wife and a mother, cooking, visiting museums, computers, reading, kayaking, traveling, mountain hiking, maintaining a healthy lifestyle through healthy eating and exercising, going green, listening to music, visiting historical sites, and Georgia Bulldog football.

Q. What is your favorite thing about being a teacher?

A. My favorite thing is knowing that every single day will be an adventure in the classroom. No matter how much planning you may do, you can only anticipate the exact path of a lesson. Teachers MUST have the flexibility to realize how the lesson should go based on the students and their needs and interests.

Q. What other information might people be interested to know about you?

A. I am a member of Phi Delta Kappa International, and the ASU Alumni Association. I have a strong reverence for nature and our surroundings. While engaging in environmentalism, I am a member of care2 environmental. I am an advocate for environmental protection toward ever-growing issues facing our society. I take pride in knowing that my efforts will help to ensure that my daughters will enjoy a quality of life that can only stem from achieving a sustainable environment today.
