Candidate profile: Allen Axon

After eight years on the Dearing Town Council, Allen Axon likes climbing.

"I've enjoyed helping the town and I want to continue," he said. "I would like to see Dearing on a rise instead of staying flat. We need to keep progressing forward."

In the past four years, Mr. Axon said the council has annexed property into the city limits, thus making it eligible for more grants and sewerage fee income. He said bringing in the kaolin processing plant, Advanced Primary Minerals, "was a good step forward" to create future jobs in the area.

One of the more obvious accomplishments of the council in recent years was securing grant money to renovate the Dearing Gym for community use.

"I'm proud of how we preserved Dearing's history by getting the gym done," Mr. Axon said.

But there is more to be done.

"I'd really like to see us get a police officer," he said.

Mr. Axon is seeking re-election to the town council, where he currently serves as mayor pro-tem. For years, Mr. Axon has been the person who puts up the Christmas light decorations in downtown Dearing, oversees the maintenance of the property around city hall, and is a Dearing volunteer firefighter.

He also works full time as the manager of Axon's Enterprises in Dearing. He and his wife, Olly, have one daughter, Elizabeth.

"She's cute as a button," Mr. Axon said with a smile.
