Christmas shoppers looking for one-of-a-kind gifts need only to travel as far as downtown Thomson. The Frog Pond Gift Corner in the McDuffie Museum is stocked with unusual historical items.
And the most recent addition is exclusive to McDuffie County: Lockets inscribed with images of Godey's Ladies were made for the McDuffie museum by a New York jeweler, according to museum Director Jenny Lindsey.
"So they're the only ones in existence," she said excitedly.
Ms. Lindsey said the jeweler liked the lockets so well after she made them, that she commented she may stock them in her boutique in New York. Other than that, they are not available anywhere else.
Godey's Ladies Book was a popular magazine in the 1850s and 1860s from which Southern ladies copied designs to make their clothes, according to Ms. Lindsey. She asked the jeweler to put the images on lockets, because they are representative of Southern ladies. The Godey's book was comparable to the Harper's Bazaar book, but Ms. Lindsey said most Southern ladies chose Godey's.
The brass lockets come in two sizes, along with a compatible heavy chain. There are several images of the Godey's Ladies available.
Not exclusive to McDuffie County, but also available at the museum are other designs on lockets, along with matching earrings or a cuff bracelet. Pricing ranges between $20 to $48.
The gift shop also stocks books, children's coloring books, and paper dolls from different time periods. Blankets and totes with McDuffie County logos and local cookbooks also are available.
