New finance director to begin Nov. 30

Darlow Maxwell soon will assume a new job -- that of finance director of McDuffie County.

Mr. Maxwell, who has been serving as city accountant/chief financial officer for the City of Doraville, is expected to begin his new job on Monday, Nov. 30, according to McDuffie County Manager Don Norton.

He will replace Jamie Sikes, the current finance director, who recently announced that she is leaving the position to go back to the private sector. Mrs. Sikes has only been at the position for a few weeks.

Mr. Maxwell was one of four candidates interviewed for the position when the county began searching to fill the post which was slated to become vacant with the retirement of Jimmy Whitaker. A retired IRS employee, Mr. Whitaker later was hired as interim finance director. He is no longer serving in that capacity.

"I think Mr. Maxwell is very well qualified and I look forward to working with him," Mr. Norton said during a telephone interview on Monday.

Mr. Norton said it is his understanding that Mr. Maxwell will commute from his home in Milledgeville.

Mr. Maxwell is a former Treasury agent with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. He performed those duties in Valdosta from 1973-1984.

He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and accounting from Valdosta State University and has had extensive formal federal income classroom training.

Mr. Maxwell also served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1967-1971. He served aboard the Coast Guard cutter Sebago in Vietnam in 1969.
