Tree-lighting event will help buy equipment for hospital

McDuffie Regional Medical Center just couldn't do without them. The hospital auxiliary will hold the 27th Annual Tree of Love caroling and lighting celebration Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Proceeds from the Tree of Love will be used to purchase a Stryker stretcher for the hospital's radiology department to use for ultrasounds.

"So, we're not here to just be beautiful little ladies running around the hospital taking care of everybody," said Bonita Hinton, president-elect of the auxiliary."We're here to be able to help and to donate money to the hospital. We're a vital part of the hospital."

Funds from last year's Tree of Love purchased new furniture for the emergency room waiting room, Ms. Hinton said.

As the auxiliary's feature fundraiser, the Tree of Love offers a way to pay tribute to special individuals by sponsoring a light on the Christmas tree for a gift of $10. The donation can be made in memory of, or in honor of, a loved one, and that person's name is acknowledged in various publications.

Not only does the tree serve as a living memorial, but the special lighting ceremony pays tribute to special individuals. This year, the star on the tree will be lit in memory of Sharon May, who worked in the business office at the hospital for 18 years. Mrs. May's husband, Bob, her daughters, Theresa and Stacy, and her grandson, Jackson, will be lighting the tree.

"Just seeing that tree come on for the first time is just a beautiful thing," Ms. Hinton said. "And with the caroling, it's all so exciting."

Following the tree lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. on the front lawn of the hospital, refreshments, entertainment by First Baptist Church's children, and fellowship will be in the hospital lobby. Santa Claus will be there for pictures, which are $3 for one, or $5 for two.

The hospital gift shop, The Sunshine Corner, also will be open for Christmas shopping. All funds raised will go towards equipment or furniture for the hospital. Envelopes for donations are available in the Sunshine Corner or at the front desk. Or, Ms. Hinton said donors may call and an envelope will be mailed to them.
