The Nov. 23 basketball season-opener wasn't pretty for the Lady Buccaneers of Briarwood Academy. They got trounced 55-26 by the visiting Lady Wildcats of Westminster School of Augusta.
Briarwood Academy head coach Clayton Parrish attributed the loss primarily to first-game jitters.
"We've got a lot of work to do," coach Parrish said after the game. "We didn't play with a lot of composure. We ran some sets well and got some good looks at the basket, but we just couldn't seem to score."
He believes his team will get much better as the season progresses.
"They'll come around," said coach Parrish. "We'll begin to see a big improvement soon, I hope."
The Lady Buccaneers were scheduled to play Westside Christian Academy on Monday and Curtis Baptist School on Tuesday. They will travel to Waynesboro Friday to take on the Lady Spartans of Edmund Burke Academy.
Briarwood's Maria-Celeste Johnson led with 13 points. Other players scoringfor Briarwood were: Maggie Keene, 4; Morgan Reese, 3; Emily Henderson, 3; Brittini Phelps, 2; and Lizzie Keen, 1.
