The 9- to 10-year-old Thomson-McDuffie Recreation and Leisure Services All-Stars defeated the Jefferson County All-Stars 32-6 on their way to winning the annual Arthur Green Memorial Football Tournament at Sweetwater Park on Nov. 19.
Thomson's defense never let Jefferson County's offense get started. Jefferson's first two possessions lasted only three plays. Thomson forced a fumble and intercepted a pass -- linebacker Quantrell Hunt getting the honor on the pick. Jefferson's only touchdown came on a kick return in the third quarter.
"My defense really stood out." Thomson coach Marcus Hill said.
While Thomson's defense was busy shutting down Jefferson's offense, Thomson's offense was just starting up. Thomson scored two touchdowns on their first two possessions -- the first one when Ja'Kobian Jones took a hand-off around the right end. He appeared to have been stopped at the 15, but managed to lateral the ball to Jimquavis Hobbs right before he was dragged down. Hobbs took possession and ran down the left sideline for Thomson's first touchdown.
Thomson's next possession saw the team commit a pair of penalties that moved them back to midfield. Later on a fourth down-and-20 play, Thomson quarterback Davon Crockett showed impressive running ability for the team's second score. The run was paved by a big block from Hunt.
Thomson never looked back again, as Hunt and Jones each scored touchdowns down the stretch that put the game out of reach.
The Thomson All-Stars went on to win the championship in their league.
