Lady Buccaneers put one in the win column over Spartans

WAYNESBORO, Ga. -- Briarwood Academy's Brittini Phelps and Emily Henderson combined to score 22 points as the Lady Buccaneers defeated the Edmund Burke Academy Lady Spartans 50-20 in prep basketball action in Waynesboro last Friday night.

It was the Lady Buccaneers' first win of the season to go with three losses.

Briarwood was scheduled to have played Bullock Academy at home on Tuesday night, Home School away on Friday night and Augusta Prep in Martinez on Saturday night. Coverage of those games will appear in sports next week.

In the game against Edmund Burke, the Lady Buccaneers simply outplayed their much weaker opponents in every facet of the game. The game, however, got off to a sluggish start, as more than three minutes went by before the first bucket was made.

Briarwood's Emily Henderson was fouled with 4:23 remaining in the first period. She managed to hit the second of two free-throws to give the Lady Buccaneers a 1-0 lead.

From that point on, Briarwood never had to look back.

In fact, they ended up leading 7-2 going into the second period. The last hoop of the initial period was made by senior Lizzie Keen.

During the first period, Briarwood junior guard Maria-Celeste Johnson made two steals that led to baskets.

In the second period, Phelps made a steal that set up a 3-pointer by Johnson and gave Briarwood an eight-point lead, 10-2. Junior center Morgan Reese had a sensational performance with her inside game, playing fine defense and yanking down several rebounds during the game.

Henderson later gave the Lady Buccaneers a commanding lead of 16-2 when she made a steal and went coast-to-coast for the layup. It was part of a 15-point run for Briarwood. Henderson later connected on a 3-pointer that made it 19-2 with 3:28 to play in the first half.

By halftime, the Lady Spartans had managed to pull within 11 points, 19-8.

Briarwood Academy built a 33-12 lead going into the final period, as Phelps, a senior, took an assist from Johnson to make another basket.
