Lady Buccaneers win two games on the road

MARTINEZ, Ga. -- The Lady Buccaneers of Briarwood Academy traveled to Columbia County on two different occasions this past weekend where they notched two more basketball victories.

The first win came over Home School by a score of 65-38 in Evans last Friday night.

Their latest victory, meanwhile, was against Augusta Prep 38-33 last Saturday night in Martinez.

Briarwood Academy was scheduled to have played Bullock Academy in Statesboro on the road Monday night. And they will travel to Sandersville this Friday night to clash with Brentwood Academy before the Christmas break. Coverage of those games will be included in a story in next week's sports section.

In the game against Augusta Prep, the Lady Buccaneers of head coach Clayton Parrish had to hang on for dear life, as their opponents attempted a rally in the fourth period.

The Lady Bucs weren't standing for it and fought back with crucial rebounds and baskets at critical times.

Senior guard Brittini Phelps was the go-to player down the stretch, as was senior Lizzie Keen and junior guard Maria-Celeste Johnson.

With 1:26 left in the game, Phelps made a big rebound and passed the ball off to Johnson who made a nice layup to give Briarwood a 34-30 lead.

Augusta Prep kept the game close when they hit a pair of free-throws seconds later.

Keen managed to put the Lady Bucs up 35-32 by sinking one of two free-throws with 1:12 left in the game.

After a missed shot by Augusta Prep, Phelps got her hands back on the ball and nailed a three-pointer with 45 seconds left, which gave Briarwood a 38-33 lead.

The Lady Bucs hit 8-of-14 free-throws, while Augusta Prep made 9-of-16 shots from the all-important bonus line.

Phelps led Briarwood Academy with 10 points. Other players scoring in the game for the Lady Bucs included: Johnson, 9, Keen, 6, Tiffany Pate, 5, Emily Henderson, 5, Morgan Reese, 2 and Maggie Keene, 1.

In the game against Home School, the Lady Bucs were paced by Maggie Keene with 15 points. She was followed by: Phelps with 12, Johnson, 10, Reese, 8, Henderson, 7, Pate, 5, Ashlyn Dent, 4 and Keen, 4.
