A local man wanted for questioning in an assault case that left a woman injured at her apartment in Thomson last week has turned himself in to authorities.
Thomson Police Department Investigator Lt. Scott Whittle said a relative of Walter Cobb telephoned him last Tuesday, Dec. 8, indicating that Mr. Cobb wanted to give himself up.
Lt. Whittle said he drove to a residence on Clemons Street that afternoon where he subsequently took Mr. Cobb into custody.
Mr. Cobb since has been charged with aggravated assault, Lt. Whittle said. He was taken to the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center in Thomson, where he is being held until he can post bail.
The suspect is accused of assaulting his girlfriend, 52-year-old Becky Ann Fountain, at her Pine Court Apartment on the night of Dec. 7. Ms. Fountain reportedly received a broken jaw and a cut to the head. She was treated at the scene by personnel with the McDuffie County Emergency Medical Services and firefighters/first responders with the Thomson Fire Department. She later was taken by ambulance to Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta where she received treatment before being released.
She reportedly is now recovering at her residence.
Lt. Whittle said the assault stemmed from an altercation between the couple.
