For $5, eat all you want at chili, soup, stew cook-off

Things will be heatin' up in the kitchens of Dearing next week in preparation for the town's annual chili-soup-stew cook-off. The event will be held in the Dearing Elementary School cafeteria at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6.

In years past, the cook-off was held as a fundraiser for the Dearing Relay For Life dream team, but this year, Relay activities were put on hold.

"There's a few of those activities that we wanted to keep going, and that was one of them," said Liz Humphrey, who serves on the Dearing Mayfest committee.

There is no fee to enter the contest. Cooks must bring their chili, soup or stew in an unmarked crock pot at 5:30 p.m. for set up. Ms. Humphrey said judging will take place right before six o'clock and prizes will be awarded in each category.

Tickets for an all-you-can-eat buffet of all the entries are $5 each, and a bake sale of desserts will take place during the event. The annual cake auction will be held immediately following the dinner.

This year's proceeds will benefit the Samaritan House, which is a free or reduced-priced health clinic in Dearing.
