Grand jury indicts Savannah man in November First Citizens theft

WARRENTON, Ga. -- A 43-year-old Savannah man has been indicted by a grand jury for the November robbery of a local bank.

Grand jurors met Jan. 25 and returned a true bill of indictment against Thomas Lipscomb Shapard, of the 100 block of Woodline Drive, according to court records filed in Warren County Superior Court Clerk Shirley Cheeley's office.

Mr. Shapard is accused of robbing First Citizens Bank on Main Street. He reportedly used a note to demand money from a teller and then drove off in a car, according to Gary Nicholson, special agent in-charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 7 Office in Thomson.

The note partially read: "This is no joke. Stay calm. Do as I say and no one gets hurt."

After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash -- all of which was recovered in the trunk of a car the suspect was driving -- he drove off. A teller at the bank spotted where the car was headed. The man was in police custody within minutes of the robbery, Agent Nicholson said.

No one was injured during the robbery.

Mr. Shapard, who had recently been released from jail in Putnam County prior to the bank robbery, was apprehended by local law enforcement officers less than five minutes after the crime, said Warrenton Police Chief Jim McClain.

GBI Special Agent Joe Brown was assigned to the case.
