Aquinas beats Thomson 'C' team

It wasn't the kind of finish to the season that head coach Curtis Williams wanted for his young Thomson High School "C" boys' basketball team.

He was hoping his Bulldogs could upend the visiting Aquinas Irish of Augusta during the team's last game of the season last Saturday. Unfortunately, such wasn't the case. Instead, it was the Irish coming out on top, 46-34 at The Dog House in Thomson.

Nevertheless, Thomson ended its season on a winning note. And they had several big wins over teams like Harlem, Evans, Grovetown and Elbert County.

Kentrell Williams led the Bulldogs' attack with 14 points. He was followed by Sherrod Hart with 8, Torrie Battle,7 and Freddie Neal, 5 points, respectively.

Thomson got off to a sluggish start, scoring only four points in the opening period of play. They trailed the Irish by 8 points, 12-4 going into second period action.

With 3:31 remaining in the first half, Thomson got behind by 10 points, 17-7, following a three-pointer by the Irish. By halftime, the score was 21-13.

In the third period with just 23 seconds remaining, Battle hit a three-pointer that cut the Irish lead to 6 points, 34-28. But before the period could end, Aquinas hit another basket that extended their lead back to 8 points. The two teams matched points during that span, 15-15.

Thomson was outscored 10-6 in the fourth and final period, which sealed the outcome of the game.
