Star shooters put up 39 points in Lady Bucs win

Marie Celeste Johnson, Morgan Reese and Brittini Phelps combined for 39 points to lift the Lady Buccaneers of Briarwood Academy past the visiting Thomas Jefferson Academy Lady Jaguars 46-41 in the regular season basketball finalé played at Briarwood last Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Johnson, the junior point guard, scored 15 points, while Reese, the team's junior center, scored 13 points, and Phelps, a senior guard, tossed in 11 points.

This week, Briarwood Academy is playing host to the Region 1-A Basketball Tournament, which began on Tuesday night and will continue through Friday night. Complete coverage of the tournament involving the Briarwood games will be included in a story in next week's edition of The McDuffie Mirror .

Cold shooting on the part of Thomas Jefferson turned out to be their demise in the second and third periods. During that 16-minute span, the Lady Jaguars were held to just 13 points.

Going into the fourth period, Briarwood Academy held a 36-29 lead.

Three-point baskets also hurt the losers, as Phelps recorded three long-range buckets and Johnson one such shot.

Four other Briarwood players scored: Emily Henderson, 2, Maggie Keene, 2, Rachel Coxwell, 2 and Lizzie Keen, 1.
