Dalton Reese pumped in 19 points, while Trey Stadler tossed in another 13 points to lead the Briarwood Academy Buccaneers to a 60-44 victory over the John Hancock Academy Rebels of Sparta during the Region 1-A Boys' Basketball Tournament hosted at Briarwood Academy last Thursday.
Reese, a sophomore starter, hit five 3-pointers during that game to lead the Bucs into the region championship game.
That game was supposed to have been played on Friday, but because of the weekend snow, the game was postponed that night, as well as on Saturday. The region title game actually wasn't played until Monday night.
Aside from the play of Reese and Stadler, three other Briarwood players also figured prominently in the win over John Hancock's Rebels. They included Thomas Lynam, Carson Wiley and Steven Gunn.
"I was very pleased with the way we played against John Hancock," said Briarwood Academy head coach Bo Fleming after the game. "We started out a little slow, but came on strong in the second half. It's great to know that we're going to be playing in the region championship game."
In the first period against the Rebels, Wiley gave the Bucs an 11-3 edge when he hit his first of two 3-pointers. Reese then extended Briarwood's lead to 10 points, 13-3 on a soft-touch basket.
Prior to halftime, the Rebels got right back into the game. In fact, they knotted the score at 21-21. The Bucs managed to reclaim the lead a little later and went into the locker room with a 26-21 lead after first half action.
Briarwood quickly built up another 10-point lead, 33-23 midway of the third period following Wiley's second 3-pointer of the game. Blake Sowell later hit his version of the long shot that gave the Bucs a 42-26 lead just before the start of the fourth and final period.
Aside from Reese and Stadler, other players scoring in the game for Briarwood included: Wiley, 8, Gunn, 6, Sowell, 3, Lynam, 3, Fifth Newton, 3, Ryan Nelson, 2 and Andrew Coxwell, 1 point, respectively.
