It was another giant game for the Lady Buccaneers of Briarwood Academy last Thursday night. And they passed the test with flying colors.
The big win came over the Thomas Jefferson Academy Lady Jaguars during the Region 1-A Girls' Basketball Tournament hosted at Briarwood Academy. The final score was 47-38.
With the victory, the Lady Buccaneers of longtime head coach Clayton Parrish advanced into the Region 1-A Championship game against the state's No. 1 Class A team, David Emanuel Lady Eagles from Stillmore. The title game was played on Monday. Coverage of that game appears in a separate story in this week's sports section.
"They always seem to make it interesting," said coach Parrish following his team's win over the TJA Lady Jaguars. "We had to deal with a lot of adversity since three of our players got into early foul trouble."
Those three players included Brittini Phelps, Maria Celeste Johnson and Maggie Keene.
"I was proud of the way we bounced back," added coach Parrish. "We controlled the tempo of the game and hit free-throws down the stretch, which allowed us to win the ballgame."
Coach Parrish said he was pleased with the performances of Phelps, Johnson and Keene.
"I thought all three of them did a tremendous job for us," he noted.
Johnson played exceptionally well, both offensively and defensively.
"Maria really controlled the floor and shot the ball real well for us," said coach Parrish. "She's been one of our key players all season long."
In the game against Thomas Jefferson Academy of Louisville, Johnson led all scorers with 21 points. The only other player scoring in double-figures was Keene, who tossed in 13 points.
Other Briarwood Academy players scoring in that game included: Morgan Reese, 6, Emily Henderson, 3, Lizzie Keen, 2, Ashlyn Dent, 1 and Phelps, 1 point, respectively.
