Bulldogs couldn't score in first half

LINCOLNTON, Ga. --- Thomson High's Jay Bieltz saved the day by scoring a second half goal, as the Bulldogs escaped the confines of Lincoln County with a 1-1 tie in a soccer match against the Lincoln County Red Devils last Friday night.

Bieltz's goal, which came at the 30:36 mark of the second half, allowed the Bulldogs to remain unbeaten this season. Prior to the tie with Lincoln County, the Bulldogs had posted impressive wins against Grovetown and Westside high schools -- both Class AAAA schools. Lincoln County is a Class A school.

"We had lots of opportunities to score more goals, but it didn't happen," remarked Thomson first year head coach Jimmy Dominquez. "We need to work on our shooting game and correct some mistakes that we made in the game against Lincoln County. We've got to learn to be more effective on the field, too, as a team."

This Friday night, the Bulldogs, now 2-0-1, are playing in South Georgia against Richmond Hill in their first Region 3-AAA game of the soccer season.

During the first half of the Thomson-Lincoln County game, Bieltz and a few other Bulldog players had several chances to score. But a stingy Red Devils defense prevented such from happening.

Lincoln County sophomore goalie Brandon O'Neal also played a key role in preventing the Bulldogs from scoring on several attempts. The only time he surrendered a goal was when Bieltz finally scored with less than 10 minutes having been played in the second half.

Earlier, Lincoln County's Luke Watson scored a goal to put the Red Devils up 1-0. The goal was scored against Thomson goalie Ben Colberg.

Bieltz wasn't the only Thomson player taking attempts to score. Dalton Herrington, Dylan Taylor, Justin Bettross and Marquis Cook are had opportunities, too. Several of Bieltz's goal attempts ended up being kicked right into the waiting hands of the Lincoln County goalie.

Several Thomson players played well, defensively. Some of them included: Daniel Shane Fayson, Marc Ricketson, Dylan Taylor, Justin Bettross, Zackary Connor, Sherrod Hart and Cullen Wallace.

In the first game of the season, Thomson defeated Grovetown's Warriors 6-5 on Monday, Feb. 22 at the Grovetown field. Bieltz scored four goals to lead the Bulldogs' charge. He was followed by Bettross, Herrington with one goal each.

Then, on Feb. 23, Thomson blanked Westside's Patriots 7-0.

In that game, Bieltz led the assault with three goals, while Daniel Fayson scored two goals. Adding one goal each was George Rosales and Alex Quarles.

Thomson goalie Dementrius D'ante Thomas recorded seven saves in the game against Westside.
