Briarwood coach hopes experience helps

The Briarwood Academy Buccaneers launched their 2010 baseball campaign on their tnew field March 3.

Unfortunately for the Bucs, the season didn't get off to the start they wanted, as they ended up losing to Augusta Prep 9-5.

Briarwood will play Thomas Jefferson Academy's Jaguars in Louisville on March 19. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

"We didn't really play a bad game against Augusta Prep," said Briarwood head coach Kevin Cowart. "We hit the ball pretty well and we got some pretty good pitching from Adam Hardy and Blake Sowell."

The Buccaneers collected nine hits in the game. Two of the players on the team, Dalton Reese and Colt Phelps, accounted for six of those hits. Both went 3-for-4 at bat. The hits were all singles with the exception of Reese, who smashed a double, too.

The other hits came off the bats of Matthew McElveen, Jarret Keen and Eric Johnson.

He's convinced that his team is going to get better as the season progresses.

"I think we just need to play a few more games and get that experience," added coach Cowart.

Hardy, the starter pitcher, like relief pitcher Sowell, each worked three innings. Ryan Nelson worked the last inning.

Hardy yielded eight hits and six runs to Augusta Prep, while striking out two batters and walking three. Sowell, meanwhile, gave up just one hit, fanned four batters and walked three. Nelson allowed two hits, struck out a batter and walked two, while giving up a couple of runs.
