Pupils write about farmers' many roles

McDuffie Farm Bureau hosted an essay contest at Thomson Middle School. The essay contest was titled, "How Many Hats Does a Farmer Wear?"   Every day, people eat fruits and vegetables. Well, have you ever wondered where this food comes from? Almost everything you eat is grown in a field and most of your clothes are made from cotton, which is grown in fields also. The people that harvest and take care of these products are called farmers. We could not live without farmers because they grow our food for us. Here are just some of the things that farmers do.

The farmer's job is never done. They have to get up early and take care of their land. Each acre has some type of crop growing on it. Some crops grow easier than others so it is not all hard work. Farmers use many types of equipment such as tractors and plows to grow all the different plants.

Farmers grow many things from corn and rice to cotton and peas. Almost everything you eat and wear comes from the fields of the farm. There are other types of farmers too. Have you ever had a hamburger or a steak? That is the type of food you would get from a farmer who produces animals on his farm. He has more responsibility than a farmer who just grows plants because plants are fed by the sun and water, but the farmer has to feed the animals. It costs money to feed the animals and take care of them. But, without farmers who raise animals, we would not have certain foods.

Animals produce many types of food for us, such as pork chops, bacon, steak and hamburgers. Without farmers to tend these animals, we would not have the food which they provide.
