Many children and teens from the Thomson Boys and Girls Club traveled to Augusta last week for the 23rd Annual Steak and Burger Dinner.
Held at Augusta State University's Christenberry Field House, the dinner is a fundraiser for the organization, a presentation of progress and the annual report, and a chance for the children to shine.
"It gives me the chance to meet new people, interact with other kids and learn from the speaker," said Ronkeem Sallywhite, a sophomore at Thomson High School who has attended the dinner for the past seven years.
The keynote speaker of the March 25 event was Dale Murphy, former Atlanta Braves right fielder All-Star and two-time National League MVP. Although his audience spanned all ages and all walks of life, Mr. Murphy spoke to everyone.
He encouraged parents to "stand back and relax," allow their children to make mistakes and "just have fun." Mr. Murphy told the story of when, as a catcher, he overthrew the ball to second base twice in one game, with the ball landing in centerfield both times. A reporter asked Mr. Murphy's father what he thought of his son's performance.
