Father, son are arrested on drugs, traffic charges

A father and his son -- one from Dearing and the other from Harlem - were taken into custody on traffic and drug charges by deputies with the McDuffie County Sheriff's Department last Friday night.

The men were identified as Joseph Steven Maddox, of the 900 block of County Line Road, Dearing and his son, Sean Oscar Calvin Maddox, of Harlem, according to a report filed by Deputy Jared Land.

Joseph Steven Maddox was charged with Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act (VGCSA) for possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine and several assorted traffic offenses.

Mr. Maddox's son, Sean Oscar Calvin Maddox, was taken to the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center on investigative hold purposes. He later was released.

The men were taken into custody following a traffic stop by Deputy Land near the intersection of Cobbham and Stagecoach roads at 9:36 p.m. At the time, the lawman had seen the driver of Ford pickup truck weave. The tag light on the truck also reportedly was out.

The driver later was identified as Joseph Steven Maddox. When Deputy Land asked for the man's license, Mr. Maddox indicated that he didn't have a license. The driver presented the deputy with a State of Georgia correctional release identification card.

At the time, Deputy Land said he smelled burnt marijuana coming from the truck. He later learned that Mr. Maddox had been drinking alcohol after he was checked by a portable Alco sensor.

The man said he and his father were en route back to Matthews where he lived. A dispatcher later advised Deputy Land that there was no valid insurance on the truck and the tag was expired. Mr. Maddox was placed under arrest. During a search of his person, Deputy Land discovered a metal cigarette box holder, containing a pack of cigarettes and a pack of Top rolling papers.

"I also noticed what looked like several pieces of a clear rock-type substance that appeared to be methamphetamine," Deputy Land said in his report.

The passenger, Mr. Maddox's son, later was questioned.

During a search of the truck, which followed with the assistance of Deputy Alan Baldwin, Deputy Land discovered a black film canister containing a white powdery residue and a plastic bag containing some marijuana. The deputy also found so more methamphetamine. Inside a bank bag, a set of digital scales also were found.

Personnel with the McDuffie County Emergency Medical Services later arrived to help the elder Mr. Maddox who had begun to complain of chest pain. He later was taken by ambulance to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

Warrants later were taken out for his actual arrest.
