Briarwood Academy girls win region track championship again

The Lady Buccaneers of Briarwood Academy are really enjoying themselves these days. They captured the Georgia Independent Schools Association (GISA) Region 1-A Girls' Track Championship for the second consecutive year.

Longtime Briarwood girls' head track and basketball coach Clayton Parrish also was named Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.

The Briarwood boys' track team also performed well. Like last year, it was runner-up behind Thomas Jefferson Academy's Jaguars.

"We did real well in region track events this year," Briarwood Academy athletic director John Osborne said. "Several of our girls and boys will be competing in this week's state track meet in Albany. We're hoping to do well down there, too."

The top four finishers in each track event are eligible to compete on the state level. The state track meet is being held Thursday and Friday at Hugh Mills Stadium.

The Lady Buccaneers accumulated 159 points during the region track meet. The closest any team came to them was David Emanuel Academy of Stillmore, Ga., which tallied 87 points.

The Lady Buccaneers' 2010 track team consists of the following student/athletes: Brittini Phelps, Taylor Echols, Anna Goolsby, Lizzie Keen, Jessie Talkington, Katie Bean, Rachel Coxwell, Sara Betts Brunner, Emily Henderson, Shannon Newsome, Christian Dawson, Marcie Rivers and MacKenzie Simpkins.
